About Labyrinth
The Clitheroe Castle Labyrinth is the only labyrinth in Lancashire. Labyrinths hold a special place in history and have enjoyed a myriad of uses, including deterring evil spirits, testing the skill of horseback riders, for pilgrimmage, ritual and spiritual contemplation.
This unique labyrinth has been designed specifically for the Clitheroe Castle Grounds by land artist Jim Buchanan assisted by Willem Kuipers and the Ribble Valley community in a series of workshops. It was constructed on the site of an old bowling green, hence its nickname, “Convex Green”, which refers to its shape, colour and history.
The Clitheroe Castle Labyrinth is constructed from grass and limestone, which makes it ideal for walking – or running, if the spirit takes you!
